Making Connections and Building Relationships

Here is a picture of some of the teachers I have been working with every day in the middle school group. (From front left: Ruth, Megan, Maggie From back left: Linda, Jessica, Catherine, Connie). My favorite part of every day is when we have free talk. We normally have a list of questions to talk about during that free talk time, but we rarely stay on those topics. I have learned so much from this group, and I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each and every one of them! -Megan

Scope

Four teams will be leading instruction in English for 2014.

DOUMEN, Guangdong, China - A team of 13 will be at Doumen for a two-week camp for primary and middle school students (about 120 total students). This camp will complement a two-week teacher training (for about 80 teachers). There will also be a senior high camp during week three. The team consists of HU students, faculty, and local community members. This is in cooperation with the Doumen Education Bureau.

ZHONGSHAN, Guangdong, China - A team of 12 will be at Zhongshan for a three-week teacher training program. We will train 90 teachers in all (30 primary, 30 middle school, and 30 high school). The team consists of HU students, alum, faculty, and local community members. This is in cooperation with the Zhongshan Education Bureau.

ZHUHAI, Guangdong, China - A team of 7 will be at Zhuhai #1 Senior High School for a 10 day English camp for about 80 students. This team consists of a camp director and 6 HU students, all with some TESOL coursework and experience. This camp is in cooperation directly with the Zhuhai #1 Senior High School.

HUNTINGTON, Indiana, USA - A TEFL certification course during this same time frame in July on the Huntington University campus in Huntington, Indiana. We are expecting 13 English teachers and university English majors from China to attend. There are also 6 local participants. Participants will take classes each day and earn a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certification at the end of three weeks. Chinese visitors will enjoy many activities, weekend trips, and time spent in local families’ homes in the evenings and weekends particularly for the Chinese participants in order for them to experience some American life and culture.
