Jumbo (on the left) is a terrific host! He and Adam (leader for the middle schools) always go the extra mile to show their American guests a good time. Each time we visit, we know that Jumbo and Adam will plan an adventure that mixes learning about Chinese culture with fun. Yesterday (Saturday), we began with a visit to an agriculture museum. It was a botanical garden of sorts. There were giant pumpkins, enormously long snake gourds, and a variety of other interesting plants. Some were new to us and others were familiar.
After the agricultural center, we enjoyed lunch at a Chinese restaurant and then went to a replica of the Emperor’s palace in Beijing, one that had been partially destroyed during the opium wars in about 1860 (at least I think I got that story right!). We also drove by the Fisher Girl statue and saw the beginnings of what Jumbo told us would be the world’s longest bridge—more than 50 kilometers when it is finished—between Zhuhai and HongKong. When finished, the trip will not linger require a ferry and will be much faster. We then spent a few hours at a large new mall before enjoying dinner together at another Chinese restaurant and returning to the mall to see a beautiful water and light show at the fountains. We all returned to our hosts’ homes, tired but happy after a great day of adventure, Jumbo style!
Susie prefers not to have her photo taken, but she posed for this one for her husband and children.
